The Bible makes it very clear that every Christian is directed to actively share the gospel with others so that we might guide them to Christ. This act of soul winning takes on several descriptions throughout Scripture, with each one highlighting a different duty of the Christian.
· Soul Winners
The term “soul winner” comes from Proverbs 11:30, which says, “The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life; and he that winneth souls is wise.” In this verse, soul winners are called wise, and they are also compared to a tree which bears the fruit of the righteous soul winner.
· Fruit Bearers
Soul winners are fruit bearers. Jesus said in John 15:5, “I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.” What a tremendous reminder that God uses us to bear fruit for Him, but that it can only be done through Christ. We are truly not capable of anything on our own, but if we abide in Him, we’ll “bring forth much fruit” for Christ.
· Fishers of Men
Soul winners in the Bible are also referred to as fishers of men. Jesus said to his soon-to-be disciples in Matthew 4:19, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” I am not a fisherman, but I know that people who fish do not always catch fish every time that they go. However, they can learn more to practice and improve their technique in order to catch more fish. But we do not stop fishing just because we do not catch a fish every time that we go. We should continue to fish in order to draw men to Christ so that they can find salvation.
· Stars
Daniel 12:3 describes soul winners as stars. Daniel said, “And they that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament; and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars for ever and ever.” Soul winners who turn people to the only source of righteousness, Jesus Christ, shall be as the shining stars. Contrasted is the alternative of producing no light and serving very little, if any, purpose.
· Watchmen
Soul winners are also to be watchmen, serving their post on the wall and guarding the city. Ezekiel 3:18 says, “When I say unto the wicked, thou shalt surely die; and thou givest him not warning, nor speakest to warn the wicked from his wicked way, to save his life; the same wicked
man shall die in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at thine hand.” Salvation is a free gift given to us by God to save us from our sin. But it is also a charge to go and to tell the lost who will die in his iniquity, his sin, that there is a way of salvation. The Bible says that we are to be watchmen, trying to warn this world of their condition.
