Today we’re talking about planning an event, an activity, a fellowship—whatever it may be that you’re in charge of hosting. Yesterday, we talked about the purpose. Today, we’re going to talk about planning. What are some things that I do, some things that maybe you want to consider when you’re putting down all of the details for your event?
The first thing that I do is I like to put out every idea that I have on a piece of paper. Whether that be for a fellowship, maybe these are the different things we want to do during the fellowship. Or a field trip, this may be the different places I want to go. I start by just putting everything down on paper—all of my ideas. There are some ideas that will help me accomplish that purpose that we talked about yesterday, and there are some ideas that may not help that purpose.
So usually, once I get all my ideas down, I go through and organize them. I split them up and say, “Okay, this one we may not actually be able to do. This one is a good idea, but it doesn’t really help me with my purpose.” I eliminate some of those ideas that I have.
Another thing that I might recommend for you to do when you’re planning an event is to get another brain—another person on board—and maybe ask them for some suggestions, some ideas. Oftentimes, I do that a lot when I have an idea for an activity or maybe some plans for something. I’ll run it by another staff member and say, “Hey, you have a different perspective. You have a different understanding, a different set of skills and expertise. What do you think about these ideas and these plans?”
So first of all, I write everything down and filter them out. The second thing when you’re planning an event, I’d say, is to bounce some ideas off another person. Have a little brainstorming session, and that will help you as you plan for your event.
