Probably one of the most amazing stories in all the Bible comes from Exodus 14. I remember hearing in Sunday school about God parting the Red Sea for Moses and the children of Israel. One preacher once said that the children of Israel experienced the very first “aquarium” as they walked through the Red Sea on dry land. What a remarkable display of God’s power!
I would like to outline this chapter for you, and hopefully, it will be a help to you. Remember that Moses had just led God’s people out of Egypt. They had witnessed the ten plagues, and yet they were suddenly faced with a PROBLEM. They stood before the Red Sea, and Exodus 14:10 says, “The Egyptians marched after them; and they were sore afraid.” Although God had just delivered them from Egypt, they now faced the Egyptian army and began to fear.
This reminds me that you and I also face problems today. We have an adversary, the devil, who “walketh about, seeking whom he may devour.” Just like the children of Israel, we have a problem. However, I am thankful that God did not leave them alone with their problem. Instead, He gave them a PROMISE. Verse 13 says, “Fear ye not, stand still, and see the salvation of the LORD, which he will shew to you today.”
The Lord also makes a PROMISE to you and me. James 4 says, “Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you.” Despite the problems we face, we have God’s promise that He will take care of us.
You might ask, “Why would God allow problems to come into our lives?” I believe God’s PURPOSE for allowing the children of Israel to face this problem is the same reason we experience difficulties today. Verse 18 tells us that the purpose was so “the Egyptians shall know that I am the LORD.” God allows struggles and challenges in our lives to reveal to the world — and to us as believers — that He is the Lord, displaying His might in our lives.
God’s POWER was on full display when He brought the Israelites through the Red Sea. Let me remind us today that God’s POWER is also at work in our lives, because I John 4:4 says, “Greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.”
