As we continue our series on the school that every Christian should be part of, today I want to come to you on the topic of the purpose of the Sunday School.
Now, what is purpose? Purpose is an object or a destination that we’re trying to reach or accomplish. I think of when I was a young boy. My dad taught me that he wanted me to mow the lawn and have straight lines. He wanted me to cut a straight path so that when the neighbors drove by, it wasn’t a zigzag pattern, it wasn’t ugly; he wanted our yard to look nice. So he taught me to find a fixed point in the future and lock my eyes on that point. And so I’d pick a tree or I’d pick a post or maybe a flower in the flower garden, and I’d fix my eyes on that and I’d walk towards it. As I’d work that lawnmower straight towards my purpose or my object or my goal, I’d look back and I’d fulfilled my purpose. I’d accomplished having a straight line.
The Sunday School has a defined purpose. Pastor Treber, when he came to North Valley, he defined the purpose. It’s in this card. We print it regularly for our teachers, and I’ll have a link for it in the message below. But I want you to really define the purpose of your Sunday School. Our purpose is tenfold.
First is salvation, that every student would know the gospel. Two is submission, that we follow the first step of obedience after salvation. And Sunday School teachers, you have the obligation to make sure your students are following the Lord in baptism. Number three, it’s sanctuary, teaching faithfulness to God’s house and the importance of the local church. Four is stewardship, that we would live our lives—the time that we’ve been given, talents, treasures, all that we’ve been given from God above—that we would steward it or use it, manage it for His glory.
The Sunday School’s purpose is soul winning, teaching and training people to fulfill the Great Commission. Then it’s scripture reading, both in the classroom and at home. Supplication, teaching students how to have a prayer life, how to walk with God, how to pray for others. Separation, being separate from the world, called out from among them and being holy. Then surrender, that we would wave the white flag, whatever God wants from my life, I’ll do it. And then service.
These ten items are very imperative to a successful Sunday School. And every item that you as a teacher put into your lesson, put into your class time, should fall under one of these ten items. And then, Christian, seek to grow in each of these areas as you attend your Sunday School on a weekly basis.
