As we continue our series on the Sunday school and the school that every Christian should attend, today I come to you about the people of the Sunday school. Who should be attending the Sunday school? Is it just for the children? Is it just for adults? The answer, I believe, is that it’s for every person in the church.
Look what the Bible says here in Deuteronomy 31:12: “Gather the people together, men and women and children, and thy stranger that is within thy gates.” Here’s the purpose that they were to gather them: that they may hear, that they may learn, and fear the Lord your God and observe to do all the words of this law.
The people of the Sunday school are the young, the old, from the nursery to those that are the seasoned saints of God. We are all commanded to grow in grace. But here the Bible gives us a specific purpose that they were to gather for. The Bible says that they were to gather to hear. There was somebody reading the scripture, the law, or teaching the law, and that they may learn. God wanted them not to be ignorant. They were to study and to learn what the law told them, and then the Bible says that they might fear the Lord their God. When we understand what God wants, we’ll have a respect, a healthy reverence for God above, and then that they might observe to do all the words of the law.
As these people gathered, it wasn’t for a social club. It wasn’t for coffee hour. It wasn’t babysitting. They gathered with a purpose, and the people of the Sunday school should gather with the purpose to hear and learn what the word of God says so that we would fear God and do what His law tells us to do. That’s the purpose of the Sunday school, and I hope that this week you’ll find yourself learning the word of God in your home church Sunday school.
