As this unprecedented shutdown continues, I’m sure that in many hearts the anxiety is beginning to rise. Now that we have begun to see the effects of lost income, curtailed liberties, and an uncertain future, it is understandable that fears should come. It is difficult to walk through a public space and see faces hidden behind masks and observe the drastic steps employed to avoid personal closeness and not be unsettled. But as believers, we are admonished by Peter with these words: “Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you” (1 Peter 5:7). Let’s consider Peter’s admonition for a moment.
We can cast all our cares upon the Lord because He Cares. That’s what Peter said, “He careth for you.” While others may minimize your difficulties or concerns, the Lord cares for each one. Notice Peter says, “all your cares.” How could Peter confidently write these words? Peter knew from experience that the Lord cared. He had seen the Lord care for his finances (Matthew 17:24-27); his family (Matthew 8:14-15); his fears (Luke 5:1-11); his failures (John 21:15-17); and his future (John 21:18-19). Peter understood that the Lord cared about every area of his life.
Not only can we cast our cares upon the Lord because He cares, but also because He’s Close. Sometimes when we are in need we have a friend who cares, but they are not close enough to render assistance. But not this Friend! He has promised: “I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee” (Hebrews 13:5). While others may be in a distant location, He is only a prayer away.
Finally, we can cast our cares upon the Lord with great confidence, not only because He cares, and He’s close, but also because He’s Capable. While some friends may care and some may be close in proximity to us, very often the simple truth is that they are not capable of meeting the need we have. But not the Lord, “For with God nothing shall be impossible” (Luke 1:37). He is able “to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think” (Ephesians 3:20).
Today, let’s cast all our cares on the Lord, whatever they may be. Family cares, financial cares, cares concerning our failures, our fears and our future, cast them all on the Lord. He cares, He’s close, and best of all He’s capable of meeting the need. Yes, please be careful…but not full of care!
He careth for you!
He careth for you!
Through sunshine and shadow,
He careth for you!
