“The LORD is good to all…”  (Psalm 145:9)

How wonderful it is to be reminded again that “the LORD is good.” But our text tells us that He is good “to all.” This tells us of the “Extensive Scope of His Goodness.”

He is good to the Degenerate. Time and time again, the Bible records for us how God’s goodness has restrained His judgment upon wicked men. It is this goodness of God in His longsuffering that leads men to repentance (Romans 2:4).

God is good to the Disobedient as well. David perhaps remembered the occasion of his own great sin. He remembered how God patiently waited until judgment could no longer be restrained, and even then, God sent Nathan the prophet with a parable that afforded one more opportunity for repentance. Truly He is “a God ready to pardon” (Nehemiah 9:17).

But, if He is good to the Degenerate, and good to the Disobedient, how much more is His goodness made known to the Devoted! The psalmist put it like this, “Oh how great is thy goodness, which thou hast laid up for them that fear thee” (Psalm 31:19). Truly the Lord is good to all. May we echo the words of Robert Robinson found in his hymn “Come Thou Fount:” “Let Thy goodness, Like a fetter, Bind my wandering heart to Thee.”
