I Will Trust and Not be Afraid

These words give to us the heart of Isaiah the prophet. Though Isaiah lived in troublesome times, his confidence was unshaken. Because of what Isaiah possessed, he could remain calm in the center of a crisis. What about us? Do we not possess the same things?

I can trust and not be afraid because with God I have the Essential Thing—my salvation. No matter what may happen, I know that my eternity is settled. That’s the essential thing. If you do not have the essential thing, you can never have peace in the time of turmoil. If you haven’t settled it—get it done today.

I can trust and not be afraid because with God I have the Everyday Thing—my strength. He promised that “as thy days, so shall thy strength be” (Deuteronomy 33:25). He will give me grace for every situation through every day. I have been granted access to the throne of grace to obtain the help I need in times of trouble (Hebrews 4:16).

I can trust and not be afraid because with God I have the Extra Thing—my song. I have something those who know not Christ can never have—a song! Job reminds us that God “giveth songs in the night” (Job 35:10). In the darkness of uncertain days, the child of God can sing because he knows that God is in control.

What though the way be lonely
And dark the shadows fall;
I know where’er it leadeth,
My father planned it all.
I sing through the shade and the sunshine,
I’ll trust Him whatever befall;
I sing for I cannot be silent –
My Father planned it all.
