Today is a very special day in our country as we celebrate Veterans Day. Veterans Day was established in 1954. Prior to being called Veterans Day, it was Armistice Day when we celebrated the end of World War I.
The purpose of Veterans Day is to express gratitude to those who have served in our military and defended our nation for these many, many years. And there’s a lot of pride that comes with being a soldier. And we have the privilege. I remember my own experience, and the first time I was able to put on my dress uniform and the pride that came with wearing that uniform.
But you know, as we celebrate Veterans Day, I also want us to look at the application of being a Christian. We all refer to ourselves as soldiers of Jesus Christ. The book of 2 Timothy, chapter 2, very familiar verse. The Bible says, “Thou therefore endure hardness as a good soldier of Jesus Christ. No man that weareth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life, that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier.”
You know, as patriots of our great nation, we serve under our flag, the red, white, and blue, but as Christians, we serve under the banner of the cross. As soldiers, we wear our uniform proudly, and as Christians, God’s soldiers, we’re to wear the whole armor of God. There’s a lot of different applications we could put with this. This week, I would like to cover a few of the attributes of a good soldier.
Today, we simply want to say, let’s express our gratitude for those who have given themselves to serve and sacrifice for our country, and also let us count it a blessing to be a soldier in God’s army to Lord Jesus Christ.
