I was reading a book about financial risk management which prompted me to consider an aspect of the Christian life that I believe would be a help to all of us. The book went into great detail about the history of risk and man’s ability to quantify that risk. We often find ourselves in a position to make decisions that involve great risk and an uncertain final outcome which can bring great benefit or great loss. The purpose for measuring the laws of probability is to help us make better decisions going forward.

Let’s consider the risk involved in the life of a Christian. We are commanded to walk by faith and not by sight. Though we cannot always see the end result of situations in our lives, if we are truly walking by faith, the element of risk is removed. For example, the world would say that Abraham incurred great risk when he left Ur of the Chaldees because he “…went out, not knowing whither he went” (Heb 11:8). Because he acted in faith, however, the element of risk was removed. There is never risk involved for the Christian who lives and walks by faith.

If we were to apply this truth to the area of giving, we would understand that we have zero risk involved when we live by faith. For example, tithing is an act of faith; therefore, we don’t need to consider the risk involved in giving the tithe. God’s provision is already promised to those who put Him first. Life does involve some areas of risk, but not in those areas where we willingly follow the Lord by faith.
