Text: Psalm 119: 105-112

How can the Bible help me in my Christian walk with God?

THE BIBLE LIGHTS MY PATH TO A GREATER END (VERSE 105).

“Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.” Psalm 119:105

Each one of us should be using the Word of God to help us attain greater heights in our walk with God. There are three ways that the Bible can help us:

  • In a PRACTICAL way.
  • In a PERSONAL way.
  • In a PERSISTENT (Determined) way.

Proverbs 6:23 says, “For the commandment is a lamp; and the law is light; and reproofs of instruction are the way of life:”

God’s Word is a candle that can give us light in every dark place, and it is also a light that shines upon all of our works and all of our ways. We cannot see unless God’s Word lights our way. It is not only a Book for my study but also a practical guide for my daily walk with God. The Bible illuminates the path that brings us closer to God.

THE BIBLE HELPS ME TO KNOW HOW TO PLEASE GOD (VERSES 106-112)

Verse 106 says, “I have sworn, and I will perform it, that I will keep thy righteous judgments.” David had renewed his covenant with God; he had bound himself to love and serve God only in order to please Him more.

Verse 112 says, “I have inclined mine heart to perform thy statutes alway, even unto the end.” David used the power God gave to him and turned to His testimonies with all of his heart. When we work with God to please Him, we can do all things.

There are two things we are to pray for in reference to our Christian duties:

  • ACCEPTANCE OF OUR DUTIES

“This we must aim at in all we do in faith that, whether present or absent, we may be accepted of the Lord. What David earnestly prays for is the acceptance of the free-will-offerings, not of his riches, but of his mouth, his prayers, and praises. “The calves of our lips (Hosea 14:2),” “the fruit of our lips (Hebrews 1:14),” these are the spiritual offerings which all Christians must offer to God; and they must be free-will-offerings, and we must offer them abundantly and cheerfully, and it is this willing mind that is accepted. The more willingness in the service of God, the more pleasing it is to Him.” –Treasury of David by Spurgeon.

  • ASSISTANCE IN OUR DUTIES

We must be as earnest to have the grace of God in us as we are to have the favor of God towards us. God will help us to perform our Christian duties if we simply pray and ask Him.

THE BIBLE ENCOURAGES US IN AFFLICTION (VERSE 107)

“I am afflicted very much: quicken me, O Lord, according unto thy word.” Psalm 119:107

Our greatest need in times of trouble is a closer walk with God. God-given afflictions will be a gain to us if we respond correctly to them because they are sanctified and given by God to make us better.

We have a promise that God will encourage us because David said, “according unto thy word.” Our service of the Lord does not screen us from a trial but rather secures us in it.

THE BIBLE KEEPS US IN GOD’S TRUTH (VERSE 110)

“The wicked have laid a snare for me: yet I erred not from thy precepts.” Psalm 119:110

Our spiritual life is the scene of constant danger: the believer lives with his life in his hand, and meanwhile all seem plotting to take it from him, by cunning if they cannot by violence. We shall not find it an easy thing to live the life of the faithful. Wicked spirits and wicked men will leave no stone unturned for our destruction. If all other devices fail, and even hidden pits do not succeed, the wicked still persevere in their treacherous endeavours, and, becoming craftier still, they set snares for the victim of their hate.” –Treasury of David by Spurgeon.

THE BIBLE GIVES US REJOICING OF HEART (VERSE 111)

“Thy testimonies have I taken as an heritage for ever: for they are the rejoicing of my heart.” Psalm 119:111

One cannot realize the importance of the Word of God in this life outside of a faithful daily walk with God.
