Text: Genesis 18:23-33
The story of Sodom and Gomorrah is infamous. It’s a striking and startling testimony to the effects of sin in a city. Sodom and Gomorrah were characterized by the same sin that Hollywood idolizes and romanticizes in our day. It brought judgment then, and it will merit God’s judgment now.
In our text, Abraham intercedes for Sodom. He prays for Gomorrah. He pleads With God for the sake of Lot. God declares to Abraham that he will soon destroy the sinful cities. Everyone within will perish.
Genesis 18:20 “And the LORD said, Because the cry of Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and because their sin is very grievous;”
Abraham immediately communes with God:
Genesis 18:23 “And Abraham drew near, and said, Wilt thou also destroy the righteous with the wicked?”
The story continues as God and Abraham converse. Ultimately, God declares that if he could find ten righteous people in that wicked place that he would not destroy it. In Genesis 19, the judgment does come. The cities are destroyed. Most do die. However, Lot is spared! Why? I believe it is due to Abraham’s intercession. Prayer did it!
Lot owes everything from here on out in his life to Abraham’s prayer. “Prayer did it!” will be his forever testimony. If not for prayer, Lot would’ve been consumed. If not for prayer, Lot would’ve lost all of his family.
It’s amazing what prayer can do! Prayer is powerful. Prayer is productive. Prayer is profitable.
Consider this:
Lot got Rescued because Abraham Prayed.
Lazarus got Resurrected because Jesus Prayed.
Hannah got Rewarded Because She Prayed.
Peter got Released from Prison because the Church Prayed.
Isaac got a “Ringer” because Eliezer Prayed.
Miriam got Restored because Moses Prayed.
Samson got Re-energized because he Prayed.
Bartimaeus got Sight Received because he Prayed.
Jerusalem got Revived because 120 in the Upper Room Prayed.
The False Prophets Got Roasted because Elijah Prayed.
The Thief on the Cross got Redeemed because He Prayed.
No doubt, you have some personal “Prayer Did It!” testimonies in your life. Maybe in a time of sickness, God healed. Perhaps in days of fear, God gave faith. It could be in a moment of need, God blessed in an amazing way and all because you or someone who cares about you prayed!
