Behold, “he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep.” Psalm 121, verse number 4, tells us that, and the next verse says, “The Lord is thy keeper.” What a wonderful truth. The word “keeper” there gives the idea of keeping and preserving, of protecting. And the Bible also says in that same chapter, “The Lord shall preserve thee from all evil.”
This week on Help for Today, we’re shouting through the Psalms, seeing all the great things that God does for us. And today we look at the fact that God keeps us. I remember when I was younger, we had a Rottweiler puppy. I was probably only in kindergarten, so I was really, really small. But eventually that Rottweiler puppy got bigger than even I was. And I was once its keeper, trying to make sure that it had food and protection. But then eventually it became my keeper, protecting me from all the cars that drove by, from all the squirrels in our trees. And I’m thankful that I had something to protect me.
But even far greater than that, what a powerful truth to realize that God, the all-powerful, almighty God, is keeping us, that He cares about us. We can rejoice and we can shout today because our God keeps us.
