This week is Thanksgiving week. Now, did you know that Thanksgiving is the oldest American holiday? While the Pilgrim 1621 celebration is often considered the first Thanksgiving, other earlier Thanksgiving events took place on land that later became a part of our great nation.
The Bible says, “Give thanks unto the Lord. Call upon His name and make His deeds known among the people.” God’s people were commanded to make known several things. We are to make known thanks, the Bible says. We are to make known prayer, the Bible says. The verse says call upon His name. We are to make known His deeds, the Bible says, or the goodness of the Lord. It’s always good to give thanks.
Thanksgiving is to remind ourselves of many things. Things like thanks, prayers, and the wonderful works of our great God. God has been so good to our nation, the great United States of America. We are blessed because God chose to bless this great land. He could have chosen to bless other nations, but he chose to bless us more than we deserve. We are blessed people because we live in a very blessed land. But America never happened by accident. God established and blessed this land for a purpose.
As our government seems to often turn against America’s founding faith and principles, may we never forget, oh, may we never forget the true basic foundations on which our great nations stand. One nation under God. We need to take every opportunity we have to instill in our true Christian values this thing called Thanksgiving or gratitude. The virtue of giving thanks always for everything because God has been so good to us.
Enjoy this Thanksgiving week with your family and friends.
