I think right away you’ll know the story of this great hymn, written in 1855. Screvin was getting ready to be married, and the night before the wedding, the young bride drowned. What a sorrow! His heart was broken. In time, he fell in love again, and just a short while right before that wedding, his bride-to-be passed away suddenly. He was despondent.

He wrote the song that most of our elementary teachers, they all said one day, “That’s my favorite song.” What a friend we have in Jesus. All our sins and griefs to bear. (Page 392) What a privilege to carry everything to God in prayer. Oh what peace we often forfeit.
