TEXT: 2 Chronicles 5:1 “…put he among the treasures of the house of God.”
INTRODUCTION: There is just no place like the house of God. The Psalmist said he was “glad” when it was time for him to go to the house of the Lord. For the believer, there is no safer harbor, no more peaceful haven, no better place than the local church! I believe that there are treasures to be found in the house of God. As we read the text concerning Solomon’s finishing of the temple, we see the phrase, “put he among the treasures of the house of God.”
Let me give you a few “treasures” you’ll find in God’s house. You can list many more, but this can get you started:
1. In God’s House, You’ll Find the Treasure of Bible Truth!
In a world that is starving for truth, the child of God gets regular doses of it! There might be a famine in the land, but the banquet table is always set in the house of God. A treasure we can find in church is Bible Truth.
2. In God’s House, You’ll Find the Treasure of Family Fellowship!
What a blessing it is to have a heavenly family. You might not have any natural, physical family to your name. Maybe, they’ve all disowned you, but if you are saved, you have a great big family. We say “brother” and “sister.” We find that treasure of family fellowship in the house of God.
3. In God’s House, You’ll Find the Treasure of Decency and Order!
Our world is crazy! Commonsense, morality, all things biblical, and much of what is even scientifically proven are all thrown out the window. Mob rule rules. Insanity is called sanity in the world. What a treasure! We have a place where decency and order still rule.
ILLUSTRATION: Grace Davidson took her four-year-old granddaughter to “big church” for the first time. She sat quietly, taking in every aspect of the service, and her attentive curiosity stayed in check until the pastoral prayer. The pastor said, “We thank You, Lord, for Your presence.” The little girl’s eyes flew open, and she whispered to her grandmother, “Granny, we’re gonna get presents!”
QUOTES OF NOTE:
“A church doesn’t necessarily need space to grow; it just needs the power of God.” – Dr. Jack Hyles
“A church is not a church when the passion for souls is gone!” – Lee Roberson
“The only way to build a church, if you have a Bible church, is to preach out of the Bible, teach out of the Bible, and read out of the Bible.” – Lester Roloff
“I have seen many men work without praying, though I have never seen any good come out of it, but I have never seen a man pray without working.” – Hudson Taylor
A MERRY HEART:
After Leslie brought home her fiancé to meet her parents, her father invited the young man into his study to find out more about him. “What are your plans?” he asked Joseph. “I’m a scholar of the Bible,” Joseph replied. “Well, that’s admirable,” Leslie’s father replied, “but what will you do to provide a nice house for my daughter?” “I will study, and God will surely provide for us,” Joseph explained. “And how will you buy her a nice engagement ring?” “I will study hard, and God will provide for us.” “And children?” asked the father. “How will you support children?” “Don’t worry, sir. God will provide,” replied the fiancé. The conversation continued in much the same fashion. After Joseph and Leslie had left, her mother asked her father what he found out. The father answered, “Well, he has no job and no plans, but the good news is that he thinks I’m God.”
DID YOU KNOW?
R.G. Lee first preached his signature message, “Payday Someday” in 1919 at a prayer meeting in Edgefield, SC, as a devotional. A deacon approached Lee and challenged him to make the devotion into a full-length sermon. Lee’s oratorical skills are on display in “Payday Someday.” He describes King Ahab as “the vile human toad who squatted upon the throne of his nation.” Lee preached “Payday Someday” 1,275 times in various venues around the world, and thousands of souls were saved because of this devotional turned sermon.
SUNDAY’S COMING
As Sunday nears, let’s turn our hearts toward the business of Sunday. To turn our hearts in that direction, it might mean that we turn our phones, tablets, TVs, and other distractions off. Go into your pulpit this week having been in the quiet place with God. Your people will notice the difference.
